Did you know that, if a workplace or activity poses risks, and it is necessary to direct a worker there, you need to provide a Work Permit (PT)/Special Work Permit (PTE)?
In this way, the safety and integrity of the employee can be ensured through this need.
This document allows the worker access to risk environments during a certain period. In this way, the company ensures that only employees with permission have access to the risk location, which reduces the risk of accidents or illnesses due to exposure to risk agents in the controlled environment.
But after all…
What is Special Work Permit (PTE)?
The Work Permit is also known as the Work Entry Permit or Special Work Permit.
In other words, it is a document that contains the necessary measures to carry out work in a risk area safely.
This permission serves not only to avoid risks, but also to clarify doubts about the stages of the work.

How does the Work Permit work?
As provided for by NR 34, this document is divided into three copies. One copy is delivered to the workplace, another is filed by the Occupational Safety area and the third is immediately handed over to management.
This document contains the necessary authorization for a worker to carry out a specific activity.
Some recommendations will also be contained on how to carry out the work avoiding the risks.
Therefore, this document must contain essential information, including the name of the company, the place where the activity will be carried out, the date and time of issue, the date and time foreseen for the conclusion of the activity.
In addition, it is essential that the detailed description of the work to be carried out, the name of the authorized worker, the procedures that must be completed before accessing the site, as well as the personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for the safe performance of the activity be present.
After issuing the work permit, the employee needs to sign it, together with the Specialized Service in Safety Engineering and Occupational Medicine (SESMT).
The work permit also contains instructions for emergency and/or rescue situations.

What types of activities require a work permit?
When carrying out activities that may pose physical or material risks, a work permit must be issued and signed.
Some of the activities that require a work permit are:
- Work in confined spaces;
- Hot work;
- Work at height;
- Excavations, shoring, demolition and drilling;
Are Work Permits mandatory?
Aiming at the well-being and safety of workers, several Regulatory Norms establish requirements for work permits in various activities that require the issuance of a PT.
As previously mentioned, NR 34 provides that the document is issued in triplicate, with the signature of the worker being mandatory and with validity limited to the time of execution of the activity.
In addition to NR 34, other standards also list requirements for work permits, such as NR 33, NR 35, NR 37, NR 20, NR 12, NR 31 and NR 30.
PTE requirements
As we have already seen, the work permit is an important document. Therefore, there are some important rules about it.
- When preparing the PT, it is essential to focus on the work environment and pay attention to details and specific features of the environment.
- PT has the ability to restrict both access to risk areas and access to equipment or work situations that present an accentuated risk.
- The employee carrying out the work is responsible for carrying the PT.
- It is necessary to terminate the Permission to Work whenever the employee leaves the work area.
- In shift changes or interruption of work, the PT needs to be revalidated.
- The work permit form must be filed at the company.
- All sectors involved in the activity must sign the Work Permit.
- The use of PPE and EPC suitable for the activities to be carried out is mandatory.
Before starting the activity, it is necessary to carry out an on-site inspection and note all possible risks.
In addition, on site, it is necessary to fill in a risk analysis form, in which we will describe the steps and verify the preventive measures that must be adopted.
When starting the activity, the worker must check if the environment is correctly signaled, safe and isolated.
In addition, the worker must read the document aloud. During the procedure, the document must be in a visible place for supervisors.
In case of failures or errors, the team needs to stop work and check the preventive measures so that errors do not occur again.
After carrying out the work, the team must carry out a complete inspection and remove everything that may be left over from the work, and then the employee must return the form to be filed in the Workplace Safety area.
Why is Special Work Permit important?
Through the Work Permit, the company ensures the preservation of the health, safety and integrity of its employees. This document contains relevant information for the correct signaling of a given service, thus reducing risks and preventing accidents.
In addition, the Work Permit plays a crucial role in the company's safety in case of accidents.
Since, through it, we can verify the adequacy of the measures adopted and ensure that all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of employees.

Conclusion
In summary, the Permit to Work becomes an essential element in the process to properly assess risks and ensure the safety of workers.
However, the Work Permit is not just a mandatory document. Its non-compliance can lead to a series of losses, including damage to the company's image, compromised employee safety, reduced productivity, fines and even the interdiction of equipment or facilities.
In addition, in cases where there is a risk of fatalities and negligence on the part of the employer, non-compliance with the Work Permit may even result in imprisonment.
For this reason, if your company involves risky activities for employees, it is essential to provide the Work Permit. This measure ensures safety for both workers and the company itself.
